If you’re more interested in suppressing coughing jags than in getting loaded on sugar-laden commercial cough syrups, this remedy is for you. It has so many great attributes, I can’t see NOT making it:
- easy to prepare
- on-hand ingredients in most kitchens
- wholesome, plant-based remedy
- effective anti-tussive
- helps boost immune system
- super low cost
So here’s your chance to create some of your own medicine.
GRANDMA ROSE’S COUGH SYRUP
1 yellow or white onion, peeled and chopped
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice, approx. 2 small lemons’ yield
Mix all together in heavy saucepan (coated cast iron such as Le Creuset works great.) Bring to boil over medium heat. Turn heat down but hot enough to keep the mixture at a slow boil. Continue boiling until onions are mushy and the mixture is thick and syrupy.
Cool slightly and take by the spoonful for cough relief. Refrigerate.
Thank you, Grams, for the sensible remedy and for all of your teachings.
