DIY Earl Grey & Other Teas with Essential Oils

I am a self-proclaimed tea monger, addict, lover.  It is my hot beverage of choice.

Earl Grey is one of my favorite teas.  Being a bit caffeine sensitive, I usually make mine with Rooibos as the “tea” instead of the traditional Black Ceylon.

If the basis of this tea is plain ol’ Black Ceylon tea, what gives it its distinctive flavor?  Bergamot (pron. bear-ga-moh) essential oil which is derived from the Bergamot orange Citrus bergamia,  a fragrant fruit the size of an orange, with a yellow color when ripe.

Making your own Earl Grey, Lady Grey (with essential oil of Bergamot and Orange) or other flavored teas is a snap.  Here’s how:

How to Make Your Own Flavored Teas:

For 1, 12 oz. beverage, place 1 tea bag or 1 tsp. of black tea in a tea infuser into mug.

Add 4 drops* of pure, organic Bergamot essential oil to bag or tea leaves in infuser.  Using only organic essential oils is very important when adding to food and beverages because the oils are being ingested directly into the body system.

Pour boiling water * into mug and let steep 5 minutes.

Remove tea bag or infuser.  Add milk and/or sugar if desired.

*Adjust the number of drops of essential oil to suit your taste.

Other Flavor Options

You’re not limited to making just Earl or Lady Grey tea.

Why not try orange or lemon?  Simply substitute the essential oil of the tea flavor you wish to create, and there you go.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Lemon essential oil for lemon-flavored tea,
  • orange essential oil for orange-flavored tea,
  • peppermint-flavored…you get the idea.

Now sit back in that comfy chair, pull up your blanket and sip on your great cup of tea as you relax by the fire.  Ahhhh.

* It’s always best to use pure, filtered water for all of your cooking and drinking uses.  This is especially important when making your hot beverages.  You can relax with that cuppa knowing it is toxin-free.
