The Top 5 Things I’ve Learned from My Dad

Early July brings fond thoughts of my father whose birthday is on the 6th.  This year is a landmark: he hits 85 and I must say he hits it out of the park!
I am so incredibly blessed to have such a model of health and fitness near and dear to me.  In fact, his influence to live healthfully with great food and exercise has been key in bringing me to this work of guiding others to vibrant health with natural healing solutions.
I can’t keep quiet about the top 5 lessons I’ve learned from my dad and I’m sharing them with you:

Lesson #1:  You’ve got to take care of yourself.  A general and not unique concept but the main point is that each part of you counts.  For example, a nighttime ritual he still follows is “doing his teeth” which involves diligent flossing followed by a good brushing.  I recently learned how important this practice is in promoting not only good oral health but overall health.  Read about the astounding interdependence between oral and overall health, especially cardiovascular, here.

Lesson #2: Eat clean.  Minimal sugar.  Fresh farm foods.  Low fat.  Protein shakes: dad was creating his “formula” decades before ‘smoothie’ was ever heard.  He drank his shake for breakfast and when he needed a boost before a workout.

Lesson #3: Get and stay in shape, it could (and will) save your life.  Do something physical every day.  Walk everywhere whenever you can.  You might get into a situation at some point in your life (trapped in a car after a collision, stuck at the bottom of a ravine with sheer walls…) where your fitness and strength will rescue you from injury or death.

Lesson #4: Rest and relax. Turn off the TV.  Take a nap.  Read.  Be still and quiet.  Write about your day and log your life.  It doesn’t matter what you use to record your life happenings and reflections: a calendar, a steno book (remember these?) or a journal will all work.  Just write it down.

Lesson #5: Like yourself.  “I’m happy with myself,” declares dad now and then.  This approach will take you a long ways.  You’ll always have good company and a pal.  The self-appreciation will also help the grace flow more easily toward you so you’ll be less harsh with yourself.

Happy Birthday, Dad!  I love you and I thank you.  You are rockin’ it!
